Volvo Construction Equipment announced three upcoming battery-electric construction machines at its Volvo Days event in May in Eskilstuna, Sweden. The new EWR150 Electric wheeled excavator and the L120 Electric and L90 Electric wheel loaders all fall into the 15- to 20-tonne (16.5 to 22-U.S.-ton) weight class. Volvo touted the zero-emissions machines’ suitability for customers who want to decarbonise their operations, take on new business opportunities with “clean” equipment requirements, and enjoy lower operating costs and more comfortable work sites.

Shortest Tailswing Radius In Its Class

Volvo says the EWR150 Electric is the first electric wheeled excavator with a short tailswing radius. It also has the shortest tailswing radius in its class, according to Volvo, and a minimised front swing radius, allowing it to operate in tight spaces.

    Fully Electric For High Efficiency

The EWR150 Electric is based on Volvo’s updated diesel EWR150E with the same features and options plus an upgraded cab. Whereas other manufacturers provide electric conversions of diesel machines in this category, Volvo claims the EWR150 Electric is an electric machine from day one in the factory, which results in a more efficient machine. Volvo says the EWR150 can typically handle a full day’s work without recharging.

An upgraded digging equipment kinematic adds to the EWR150 Electric’s reach and lifting capacity. Available options include undercarriage combinations, outriggers, blades and hitches, attachments such as the Steelwrist Tiltrotator, and Dig Assist apps including On-Board Weighing and In-Field Design.

    Volvo EWR150 Electric Specifications

    • 15-t (17-U.S.-t) weight class
    • 15,400 to 17,900-kilogram (33,951 to 39,462-pound) operating weight
    • 0.73-metre³ (0.95-yard³) bucket capacity
    • 1,720-millimetre (68-inch) tailswing radius
    • CCS2 and Type 2 automotive charging sockets
    • Onboard 22-kilowatt AC charger (32-ampere/400-volt) for overnight charging
    • Fast charging in approximately one hour with a range of optional fast off-board chargers, including a 250-kW DC unit

    EWR150 Electric Benefits

The Volvo EWR150 Electric produces zero emissions, so it can operate indoors without a fume extraction system or spark arrestors. The wheeled excavator can also work in low-carbon zones and cities with strict environmental regulations. Its nearly silent operation allows it to operate in noise-sensitive areas near schools or hospitals or during evening or nighttime hours.

The quiet, low-vibration, and fume-free operation provides a more comfortable work environment, easier communication, and reduced worker fatigue. Volvo says the EWR150’s battery-electric driveline and lack of engine consumables also lower maintenance requirements by 30% and energy costs by 65% on average.

    Availability

The EWR150 Electric will be available from mid-2025 to select customers in Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands for construction, road work, utility installation, and landscaping applications.
