Volvo Construction Equipment unveiled three new midsize electric construction machines at its recent Volvo Days 2024 event in Sweden, including the 15-tonne (16.5-U.S.-ton) L90 Electric, which Volvo says is the first electric wheel loader in its class. The other two are the L120 Electric wheel loader with a 6-t (6.6-U.S.-t) lifting capacity and the EWR150 Electric wheel excavator with a short tailswing.

All three machines are well-suited for indoor environments and work sites where quiet, zero-emissions operation is needed. Better still, the machines match or exceed the performance of their diesel-powered counterparts. Volvo claims the new electric machines offer a 65% energy reduction and require 30% less maintenance.

    Volvo L90 Electric Specifics

The L90 Electric uses dedicated electric motors for propulsion and hydraulics. These deliver full power to both systems and make operation easier. Volvo designed a new transmission for the electric platform that it says delivers faster response and shorter cycle times. The wheel loader’s electric drive motors function as generators when decelerating to recoup energy and extend runtime and brake life.

Operators will get four to five hours’ work from the wheel loader’s 180-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for most medium-duty tasks and a full day for lighter applications. An onboard 22-kilowatt AC charger recharges the battery from 0 to 100% in 6 to 7 hours. Other charging options include an off-board 150-kW DC charger and a PU500 Mobile Power Unit, either of which can fully recharge the L90 Electric in just 70 minutes.

    Volvo L90 Electric Specifications

    • Operating weight: 14.5 t (16 U.S. t)
    • Lifting capacity: 4.5 t (4.9 U.S. t)
    • Static tipping load at full turn: 9,500 kilograms (20,943 pounds)
    • Bucket capacity: 2.1 to 7.3 metres³ (2.7 to 9.5 yards³)

    Energy, Maintenance & Service Benefits

The L90 Electric has a nice array of benefits for customers, whether they’re putting the machine to work in industrial material handling, forestry, agriculture, landscaping, quarries, mining, waste and recycling, or other applications. In addition to a 60 to 80% reduction in energy costs, owners can expect a 4,000-hour oil change interval and fast maintenance and servicing times thanks to ground-level service access, a hood that opens with the push of a button, and swing-out radiators. The L90 Electric will be available in select European markets in 2025.
