Compressed air is a very adaptable and relatively safe power source when compared with the use of, for instance, electricity in wet areas. The compressor is usually portable, self-contained can be situated some distance from the operatives which keeps the noise and pollution levels low for those using the pneumatic tools. While the tools, often breakers, are inherently noisy, a lot of work has been done on reducing the noise, dust and vibration caused by the use of these tools.

Another reason pneumatic tools are popular is that their working pressures are usually less than 20 bar and well below the 100+bar used for hydraulic tools meaning less energy is required to complete a job using pneumatic tools than is required for their hydraulic equivalents. Although the pressure is lower, there are still health hazards associated with compressed air so it has to be used carefully.
The more popular working pressures for pneumatic hand tools are 7 or 14 bar while other items can require very much higher pressures. Compressors not only need to pressurise the air but also produce it in the quantity required (usually denoted as the free air delivery). At the smaller end of the market compressors are often classified as one- or two-tool machines.
