    Waste Compactor

Any compactor is a heavy-duty piece of equipment and will represent a sizeable investment for most operators. To get the best out of a used compactor, you need to be aware of the different types of plant on offer and make sure that the one you select is capable of handling your requirements. The smallest type of compactor is the horizontal stationary or breakaway compactor. This unit is good for waste types such as dry paper, cardboard, wood and plastic. You will often find this type of compactor in environments such as retail, industrial units or warehousing. Sizes range from just a few cubic metres of the compactor unit itself and the machine can be connected to a full-size container.

A second type of unit is the self-contained compactor. This can handle household wastes such as wet food waste and food processing waste. It is also sometimes used for medical facilities and shopping malls or supermarkets. Sizes range up to 35 cubic metres or more. A third type of compactor is the front- or rear-load compactor. This is mostly used for wet waste, including food waste. It can be found in medium-size retail situations, hospitality venues and in the fast food industry. Sizes are around six cubic metres.

    Overview

When choosing your compactor, questions should be asked about the overall volume of the waste to be handled. You should also consider the actual size of the waste - does it involve large boxes and bags and is the opening large enough to cope? The type of waste is also an issue. The stationary type of compactor is good at compacting dry waste, for example, while a self-contained model is liquid-tight and better for wet waste. If you can process all of your waste at one central location, then a large single unit might be best, but if your needs are more dispersed or transport is an issue, then you might want to consider a number of distributed smaller units.

In a similar vein, the actual physical amount of available space may limit the choice of compactor to a smaller unit. You should also be aware of overhead clearance requirements. You need to consider the access requirements for the collection truck. If you have a need to recycle, then you should also look at these volumes and consider whether they warrant a separate waste stream. Further recyclable compactors may be required. This would also have an impact on the electricity supply, which should in any case be sufficient for the requirements of the compactor.

You should be able to understand the compaction ratio of the compactor you are choosing. This is a key consideration when sizing your compacting operation and arranging for disposals. This is clearly dependent upon the type of compactor being used and also the type of waste being processed. Other factors, such as the peak load, need to be considered to ensure that the chosen compactor can handle the busiest times without creating a backlog. It should also be remembered that many compactors will require the installation of a concrete base and potentially other supporting infrastructure.
