Caterpillar Inc. today announced the introduction of a 3.1 MW power node for the Cat G3520 Fast Response natural-gas generator set, launching their largest single-unit output with this capability for supporting standby and demand response in grid-connected and microgrid projects.

The 3.1 MW Cat G3520 Fast Response generator set is engineered for critical applications, where the need for uninterrupted power is essential. There are several advantages, including: significantly reducing downtime through diesel-like performance, and enabling customers to participate in utility-sponsored programs, creating new avenues for operational cost recovery and revenue generation.

Built To Succeed: Minimizing Downtime & Ensuring Power Availability

The Cat G3520 Fast Response ensures rapid and reliable power delivery through its unique capabilities. It can start and accept load from a cold start in under 10 seconds, aligning with NFPA 110 requirements. This standard supports the provision of dependable backup power during outages in critical facilities such as healthcare institutions, data centers, emergency service centers, and high-occupancy buildings, where operational continuity is essential.

This comes available in both 50 and 60 Hz applications, offering flexibility for global deployment.

Delivering Financial Benefits Through Demand Response Opportunities

The Cat G3520 Fast Response generator set offers customers opportunities for additional revenue via participation in demand and emergency response programs that incentivize users to reduce or shift electricity consumption during peak demand periods. These programs can be further optimized through integration with a Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS), such as Cat AMP, which automatically enrolls customers and confirms their program participation in real time, maximizing the economic benefits available to them.

“Our fast-response natural-gas generator sets deliver unique performance, comparable to the start-up and load acceptance of diesel-fueled power solutions,” said Melissa Busen, senior vice president for Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division. “This new 3.1 MW power node supports our customers’ energy resilience in critical power applications.”

The 3.1 MW Cat G3520 Fast Response generator set adds to Caterpillar’s portfolio of natural-gas power solutions with fast-response capabilities. It is built on the iconic Cat 3500 engine that has decades of experience across the world. Caterpillar now supplies seven 60 Hz standby power nodes from 500 kW to 3.1 MW certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for emergency and non-emergency applications. Additionally, the company offers 2.5 and 3.1 MW models for 50 Hz operating environments.
